Lisbon taxi fares: calculator and the new 2026 tariff

What a Lisbon taxi costs under the new tariff from 23 October 2026: €2 to start, €0.58 a km plus a per-minute charge, and fixed prices from the airport.

Facts checked by Roshid on 15 October 2026

Portugal changes the way taxi fares are worked out on 23 October 2026. The meter starts lower, then charges for both the distance and the minutes of the whole trip, and the extra charge for luggage goes. The calculator below estimates a fare under the new rules. Under it you'll find how the new meter works, why some taxis will still use the old tariff until January, and the fixed prices for taxis from the airport.

How the new meter works

The new tariff comes from a national regulation by the transport regulator, the AMT (Regulamento n.º 1324-A/2026). It replaces the old price agreement between the government and the taxi associations, which set different prices for city trips and for trips out of town.

  • Distance and time, together: the fare is the start price, plus a price per km, plus a price per minute for the whole trip, moving or not. The same distance costs more in heavy traffic than on empty roads.
  • Day and night, weekday and weekend: the per-km price is the same at any time. The per-minute price is multiplied by 1.25 on weekday nights, 1.5 by day at weekends and on public holidays, and 1.75 on weekend and holiday nights. Day is 07:00 to 22:00.
  • Which holidays count: Portugal's national public holidays. Lisbon's own holiday on 13 June (Santo António) is a local one, so it is not among them.
  • Five or more passengers: the start price and the per-km price double only when more than four people actually travel in a larger taxi. A people carrier taking three passengers charges the normal price.
  • Booking: if you call a taxi or book one in an app, the €0.80 supplement must already show on the meter when the trip starts.
  • Tolls: if the route uses a toll road or bridge, you pay the toll on top of the meter.
  • Uber and Bolt: this tariff covers taxis only. Ride-hailing apps set their own prices, shown in the app before you book.

In the first year the regulation sets the prices at €0.58 a km and €0.28 a minute, which it describes as a 9% cut from its reference prices of €0.73 and €0.34. The taxi federation, the FPT, has pointed out that 9% off those prices would give about €0.66 and €0.31, and has asked the regulator how meters should be set. Our calculator uses the prices the regulation states. The regulator can update prices during 2027, and regular updates take effect on 1 April each year.

Until January, some taxis still use the old tariff

The new tariff can't be used before 23 October 2026, and each taxi switches only once its meter has been reprogrammed and checked. The deadline is 21 January 2027. Until then, you may get either tariff. The quickest way to tell is the amount the meter shows when it starts: €2.00 on the new tariff, €3.25 or €3.90 on the old one.

On the old tariff, the price agreement of June 2022, the meter starts at €3.25 on weekdays between 06:00 and 21:00, and at €3.90 at night and all day at weekends and on public holidays. Luggage that has to go in the boot or on the roof adds €1.60, as does a pet (guide dogs travel free), and booking by phone adds €0.80. Small bags, up to 55 × 35 × 20 cm, wheelchairs and pushchairs travel free.

How much is a taxi from Lisbon Airport?

From the airport's arrivals rank, a taxi into Lisbon now costs a fixed €16 or €19 on weekdays by day, and €20 or €23 at night, at weekends and on holidays, depending on the zone. The prices were agreed between Lisbon City Council, the airport operator ANA and Turismo de Lisboa, with the two taxi associations. They apply only to trips that start at the airport rank. For trips to the airport, or anywhere else, the meter runs as normal.

Fixed taxi prices from the airport rank
TopicPrice
Zone 1€16 on weekdays 07:00–22:00; €20 at night (22:00–07:00), at weekends and on holidays. Alvalade, Areeiro, Avenidas Novas, Beato, Lumiar, Marvila, Olivais, Parque das Nações, Penha de França and Santa Clara.
Zone 2€19 on weekdays 07:00–22:00; €23 at night (22:00–07:00), at weekends and on holidays. Ajuda, Alcântara, Arroios, Belém, Benfica, Campolide, Campo de Ourique, Carnide, Estrela, Misericórdia (Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré), Santa Maria Maior (the Baixa and Alfama), Santo António, São Domingos de Benfica and São Vicente.

The taxi association ANTRAL says the fixed prices come with no supplements, that drivers must accept card payment, and that they can't refuse a trip. Places outside Lisbon have a fixed price on Turismo de Lisboa's list, or go by the meter if they are not on it. The scheme was still being set up when it started: the head of the taxi federation said it should be fully running in early November, when the price boards in arrivals are due to go up.

The cheapest way in is the Metro: the red line starts at the airport, and with a navegante card a ride costs €1.90.

Tips for a taxi in Lisbon

  • Check the meter: a taxi you hail in the street or take from a rank charges by the meter, except for the airport's fixed prices. Make sure it starts when you set off, and look at the start amount.
  • Ask for a receipt: you'll need it to claim the cost back, or if you want to complain.
  • Traffic costs money now: under the new tariff every minute counts, so at rush hour the Metro or a train can be the cheaper way across the city.
